It really is all about you! (Wedding Planner tip #1)

You have announced to your friends and family that you are ENGAGED!!!!! Happy celebration and champagne! Blissful hearts and flowers! Love is in the air and it's all about you! Until it isn't...

Why is planning what should be the most wonderful, fulfilling day of your life so stressful? Why are Brides depressed and weepy and angry?

Well...Mom says you have to get married in June, but you want a fall wedding. Your bridesmaid doesn't love the colors you chose and isn't quiet about it. She has even found "alternatives" for you to consider. Your cousin Ed is allergic to gluten, so your aunt has requested you order an additional cake for the gluten sensitive people. You thought a Tuesday wedding would be fun, but half the family is complaining that they can't travel during the week. Your Mother in Law won't attend if your Father in Law does.

These are examples of the tiny things that add up to make your special day the most stressful day. It gets more complicated when mom and dad are paying. This leads them to believe they have a say in the decisions. This is valid.

How do we combat stress and depression as a bride to be? Rule #1. Remember it really is all about you. Do not be afraid to disappoint people or upset Great Aunt Tilly, whom you have only met once....

***Decide what 3 things are the most important to you. Then stay strong. It is ok to compromise with your mother on the other things. If your priorities are Dress, Flowers, Cake, then let her change your invitations to white rather than eggshell. If you want a cake in different flavors, find someone who will do it, and ask a relative to bring a gluten free cake that will stay in the kitchen to be served upon request.

If a Fall wedding is a top priority, you might compromise the day, or let mom help pick the flowers.

Give just enough that they feel like they were allowed to contribute, but stay strong on the things that mean the most to you. Then, relax and enjoy your day.
